He's baaaaaccckkk!

Hey Team Readers,

I'm back. I took the boards and, while I don't get my score back for another 6 weeks, I'm back to blogging. The biggest news in my life is that I got the new iPhone and I'm really digging it. I'm still debating if I should sell my old one and then buy a new iPod Touch or just hang on to the old gear. The reason I need an additional, non-phone device is that I'd like to carry it around the hospital without exposing the new iPhone to bodily fluids or other hazards.

But the fact is that I live a pretty blessed life. I know that and I'm thankful to my parents and those who have given me opportunities in my life.

That being said, this clip is from The Soup (one of my favorite TV shows) and pretty much expresses some of the cold reality of getting a new iPhone. I'm not complaining though. ;-)

Two quick pop culture hits coming at you.

1. Gary Vay-ner-chuck is passible by himself, but when he has guests on his WineLibraryTV podcast he always tries to one up them. Its a serious problem that makes the episodes not so much fun as awkward.

2. All of the contestants on Next Food Network Star need to be fired. There are no hidden gems in that lot and there's a reason most cooking shows go through lots of phases from pilot to limited distribution to full out dailies. Of the people on the show that appear to know how to cook, none of them are telegenic. Of the people who have some sense of personality, none can cook. So, I predict the show they're going to get is going to be awful. A-W-F-U-L, awful.

Young @ Heart Again

The Young @ Heart choir sings the Ramones' "I Wanna Be Sedated"

I'll admit I was wrong about Viva la Vida

Dear Coldplay.

I was wrong. Let me clarify that. I was right that you shouldn't advertise your album on TV because that makes it seem desperate, but I was wrong that its quality might be lacking. This is a solid album. It's not my favorite of your catalog, but it is compelling.

I think it was a mistake to make Viva la Vida the first single off the record though. Across the disc, this song is the one that most exemplifies the Coldplay oeuvre. That song can come on the radio and, even if I hadn't heard it before, I'd think "Hey that's Coldplay."

But, I think Strawberry Swing is...totally awesome. I like how the tones are clearer and more distinct than a lot of your other songs. You've always been famous for a really lush production style, but I think the sonic texture of this tune is totally rad. Its like the crunchy bits on homemade macaroni and cheese. Sure, everyone comes for the creamy cheese and pasta, but true mac 'n cheese fans know that homemade stuff baked with crunchies there to offset a creamy texture is where its at.

All in all, great effort gents. I need to get back to work now, but know that Strawberry Swing totally lifted my mood.

Yours,

Lars

Because there are more important things.

Wow...one of the problems that I encounter in my life is that I can get so wrapped up in my own worries and bullshit that I forget how awesome life really is. I'm a big movie fan, especially uplifting documentaries. And you know what? Watching a great documentary with a really great date is a good way to lift your head up and see that, despite what you might see when you're stuck in your own apartment, life can be pretty fun.

The documentary I watched last night was called Young @ Heart. I recently lost my adopted grandmother back in Phoenix to COPD and watching this flick really reminded me that she was the kind of lady who had the spirit that the members of this chorus have. If you can check it out in your area (for the ROC people, its at The Little) I think you should. It'll definitely make you smile and maybe it'll change how you've been feeling about yourself for a little too long. This movie made me even consider going into geriatrics. Not kidding.

Here's the trailer and some music videos the chorus has made.
